The manipulation of the soft tissue of the body through massage is as old as history itself – human beings have engaged in such treatments since they first began to touch. Through history, diverse systems and theories for the treatment of pain and the dysfunction of the muscular system have come and gone.
Currently, the originality of any system of massage tends to be built around the philosophy that underlies it, and not so much on the techniques and manoeuvres that constitute it. The theory or philosophy of any manual massage system will dictate the order in which technical sequences are applied, and aim to explain the results as well as the proposed mechanisms of action.
The arrival of the scientific era now gives us a constant flow of knowledge that consequently changes the theory and philosophy of massage from day to day.
The style of work at Oasis is characterised by long years of study and miniscule attention to detail, based on our experience, and on fundamental scientific truths, without leaving aside any facet of this art form. That is why even massage therapists with over 20 years experience find Californian Oasis Massage to be a union of traditional and modern rudimentary ideas and techniques that represent a truly mature, efficient, fresh and effective vision of body work.
The system, upon which Californian Oasis Massage is built, enormously facilitates the incorporation of new knowledge and leading techniques. Its permeable and fluid structure guarantees a constant evolution that appropriately reflects the great flow of new information.
Californian Oasis Massage is our synthesis after many years of work in the Esalen Institute, Big Sur, California and extensive work in the field of Miofascial Release, Neuromuscular Therapies, Clinical Massage, the Hawaiian Temple Massage, Cranial-Sacral Therapy, Visceral Mobilization and Harmonic Pulsing, to name just a few of its components.
The objective of Californian Oasis Massage is to serve Consciousness; seeking to refine, expand and make ever more subtle the experience of what is, utilising the language of the body. It works simultaneously on various fronts to generate a truly holistic treatment. It honours its Gestaltic principles in emphasising that which is perceived and felt over that which is explained or interpreted.
From a technical point of view it applies a wide and varied range of manoeuvres, based on scientific principles, generating different physiological responses in the soft tissues of the human body. These are principally realised with different parts of the hands, forearms and elbows using oils and creams, as appropriate, to facilitate fluidity.
It has been a pioneer in the study of the rhythmic variations of the body.
Its meditative nature permits that experiences, ranging from the most common physical experiences to those of a more subtle nature, or those of a greater emotional content, are warmly wrapped within a respectful level of contention.
This rests within the healing consciousness of both the therapist and the patient, within a relationship based on true contact. It is here, in the quality of contact expressed through the smoothness and sensitivity of the hands, in the breath which reaches the depths of the stomach, in the fluidity of movement that reminds us of a tai-chi master, and in the profound stillness of the mind, where this technique transforms into an art form and expands to incorporate elements of millenary traditions.
This allows each gesture to become an artistic expression of the divine, of the love that unites everything, inspiring and evoking as much in he who gives the massage as in he who receives it.
In our classes the fundamental techniques, ideas, concepts and philosophy of Californian Oasis massage will be presented. Acquiring as much experiential knowledge through contact with others, as scientific theory, the participants will learn all the different facets of this form of bodywork.
From a technical point of view, Californian Oasis massage is a combination of:
- varied and creative compressions,
- detoxifying stretches,
- long slow strokes over the skin,
- gliding compressions,
- sculpting of the deep tissue,
- passive manipulation of joints,
- subtle and rhythmic rocking,
- gentle holds for integration and expansion,
- delicate cranial-sacral balancing
- and the precise detail of neuromuscular work.
This style does not possess a pre-established protocol.
Rather it is marked within an embracing wave that progresses through different rhythms, by the means of fluid and continuous transitions. It is characterised primarily by its capacity to simultaneously pay attention to detail whilst not losing sight of the totality of the individual. The technique follows with precision the anatomical and functional details of the areas that are the causes of the reported pains of the patient, to later verify and integrate the obtained results through tests of movement, generally passive, of the body.
Through this procedure it acts on a mechanical and functional level of the anatomical structures, and later establishes contact with the unconscious patterns which are frequently the initial cause, and the sustaining problem, of the pains that are treated.
The Californian Oasis Massage classes have been created with everyone in mind, independently of the quantity of massage experience that each person may have.
The development of the corresponding level of theory, demonstrations and practical exchanges, giving and receiving of massages in each class will be the fundamental tools of the training.
Our primary objective is that each student be able to incorporate the intellectual understandings and develop the analytic capacity to find solutions to the problems presented by the patient, just as developing the sensitivity, the intuitive consciousness, the trust and the personal ability to remain centred, flowing and truly present whilst giving the massage.
The study program of Californian Oasis Massage is recommended for those who wish to learn to touch and be touched from the deepest part of their being; to incorporate in their daily work an intellectual challenge, dance, breathing, and meditation, through a technique subtly defined, efficient and permeable to change, that maintains itself at the forefront of bodywork.
